Who's ready for a calm, rational rant? You're not? Oh well, you're gonna get it anyway.
For the past few months, I've noticed a depressing fact: the only way to become mainstream in this fandom is to do some kind of rule 34/ grimdark oriented work. The vast majority of Bronies (not all of them) love these kinds of things and are also unwilling to look at certain aspects of what THEY like in a different light. Which is why I've kind of renounced my being a Brony. Simply put, by talking to others in the fandom I've gotten the vibe that the majority of Bronies hate ones like me. There are those like me opposed to Rule34 and Grimdark for various reasons, some stupid and some legitimate, those like me who do OC work, and OC's are shit upon because, like I said, many Bronies are unwilling to accept things out-of-canon aside from their own pairings. This is evident by the amazing numbers of hate emails and Skype messages I get regarding:
1) Jump! and peoples' aversion to an Applejack pairing NOT with Rainbow Dash
2) I Am Not Afraid AND My Special Day because of peoples' belief of canon FlutterMac
3) This New Rhythm and the obvious VinylTavi pairing
4) Repair and Deliver and the love of Whooves X Ditzy
5) A New Start and the belief that Gilda is in love with Dash
6) Moving the Stars and the always popular Twixie
Now, why is this evident of aversion to a different perspective? Well, it's BEST explained by using This New Rhythm.
Think: Vinyl Scratch, a background DJ pony with about 12 to 14 seconds of screentime under her belt, and Octavia, a high-class cello player in an orchestra with about 20 to 30 seconds of screentime. The two are polar opposites and have never even been SEEN together on the show. There is absolutely zero evidence to support that there is a love affair between the two. However, when I introduced Beat into the picture, I gave him and Vinyl a history together. They were from the same town, and met each other at a very young age. There's actually a reason the two would be attracted to each and created a legitimate, working pairing. This same principle presents itself in Moving the Stars. Trixie only knew Twilight for 11 minutes. She's known Astro since she was young and has spent most of her life with him.
Now, some people have argued and said that, in all of my stories, characters were just rushed into a relationship with no development. NOT TRUE. Some were rushed in, and here's the ones that were:
1) I Am Not Afraid
2) Moving the Stars (kind of)
3) This New Rhythm
You notice anything that these three have in common? All three colts had a history with the filly they were paired with. The relationship had already been developed by my explaining that they had known each other for some number of years. However, if you've paid attention
in Jump!, A New Start, Secrets of the Past, and Repair and Deliver, a romantic relationship hasn't even FORMED yet. Now Secrets is an exception, there is no OCxCanon in the fic, and it's only three chapters long anyway. I really should get to work on not only the fic itself, but a new cover. Regardless, Jet, Cobalt, and Diggs are still in the friendship phase of the eventual romantic relationship. I'm not just going to have two characters meet and fall in love, that's not how it works.
To finish off my defense, I've noticed that a large portion of haters are complaining that "[insert name here] is gay for [insert name here]". This, my friends, is intolerance. Reverse intolerance. Most people think of intolerance regarding sexual orientation as being an aversion to homosexuality, but in this case haters are unwilling to accept the fact that there are people like me out there that think romance between a male and female just SOUNDS better, or is easier to write. Now, me being a Christian does play a minimal role, but is not a major influence as to why I ship the way I do.
Conclusion:
The fandom simply doesn't like my kind. We go against the popular way of thinking, so we're spurred for it.
Love and Tolerance, eh?
